Harvest Church of the Nazarene
As It Was In the Days of Noah

(Adapted from Brother Rash’s Sermon on March 25, 2007)

As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.  For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. ” (NIV, Matthew 24:37-39)

1)     First, it was a day of apathy and unconcern for spiritual matters.

a.      Eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage right up to the time Noah entered the ark.

b.     Every Sunday we see people out mowing the lawn, walking the dog, washing the car, and not one of these things is wrong, but are they the right things to be doing on Sunday morning?

c.      Whether it’s sleeping-in or going to a family reunion, it shows a general lack of respect for the Lord’s Day and a lack of concern for the spiritual welfare of one’s self and his family.  Those people aren’t doing anything bad but it shows they don’t care about their spiritual wellbeing.

d.     Jesus said it would like this when He come again.

2)     Secondly, it was a day of unbelief.

a.      Jesus said, “and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them away.”

b.     It wasn’t that they didn’t know, it was that they didn’t believe.

c.      The Bible describes the end times as a day of unbelief and forsaken faith.

3)     Thirdly, another characteristic of the day of Noah was widespread wickedness.

a.   Listen to what God says about Noah and the people of his day:  This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God. Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth. Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.” (NIV, Gen. 6:9-13)

b.   That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man, said Jesus.

In the same discourse, (Matthew 24: 12-14), Jesus said, “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.”  You must ask yourself if you are ready for His return?  Have you suffered from backsliding?  Don’t let Satan whisper in your ear that you have lots of time to get ready.  Remember, as long as you live, there is hope for your salvation.
